AN APPRECIATION
The Late Dr. Napier McLean,
The services, as referee, rendered (to the Wellington Boxing Association by the late Dr. A. L. Napier McLean were referred to by Mr 11. W. McVilly, the President, at the meeting- of the Wellington. Boxing- Association on Friday evening of last week. In moving -a resolution that an appreciation of the deceased doctor's services be placed on record, Mr - McVilly added that Dr. Napier McLean voluntarily came forward and took up the position of referee lat a time the Association was m a I rather parlous condition, m fact, the | condition of boxing m Wellington was so low that had not the deceased stepped into the breach to 1 help the Association there was a ! great chance, of the sport going- to ! pieces, and it had one of two exper- | iences which* were not altogether satjisfactory. Dr. McLean brought with; him wide experience. Ho was a man I well versed m boxing, and his oosi- ! tion inspired the respect of the public and the boxers. From the I time he joined forces with the Assoc iation until the time arrived when, ' unfortunately, he was prevented from taking any active pai't, the sport was uplifted and benefited greatly. He came to be regarded as an authority on all matters appertaining to boxing m New Zealand, and his services were much sought j after by different Associations. '■ Speaking from personal knowledge, Mr McVilly said that the deceased doctor had, through his services as j referee, suffered considerable professional loss. He was sure that all felt the deepest sympathy for the widow and her family m their ' liereavement., On the motion of Mr Fordham, the Association adjourned out of respect for the deceased referee.
