IMPRESSED HIS WORSHIP.
Tho Problem of.Julia Crowley. One of the problems of modern civilisation is the aged and toothless derelict, particularly the female, whose appalling list of convictions is a bar .tothe pension,* and who- mopes about the landscape, a roofless creature that might take it Into her head, to die on the premises of some respectable,.person. Ancient Julia Crowley,, was found m a convenience on a- citizen's property m Christchurch at 3 d'clock the other morhliig, and was afterwards confronted' with the old charge of rogtiery and vagabondage. ..Every .charitable institution m Cnristchurch has sampled Julia, and turned her down, for the old battler dearly loves her liberty and her own way, and her cautankerousness disturbs the peacel'ulness of the homes, and if she is ejected she can only find refuge m gaol. The Sub-Inspector said that the wrinkled one-' was a nuisance m the community, which led Magistrate Bishop to remark, wearily, 1 that she had been- a nuisance for the past twenty years and would be a nuisance to the-end, ■ He convicted and discharged her, and warned her of the pains and penalties that awaited her if she .appeared before him again. ' "I won't'- be' alive. then," mumbled Julia, asyshe left the box. It is true that- the magistrate is also the coroner, and Julia's observation seemed to impress his Worship. A woman like that might commit some desperate, act, he said.,... ."We • -vyill bring her up again," said Sub^lnsp'^s-. tor McGrath, with the confidence, b'o)^,.of experience..... His T Worship:.
