CONCERNING HEG ARTY.
Thus Brisbane "Truth" on the amateur light-weight champion :—
The lightweights was a class m which Queensland's hopes rose and fell with a heavy thud. George Slack, son of the once champion boat-puller Mick, knocked his opponent down m such a tradesmanlike manner m the ■first bout that he was immediately proclaimed a marvel. But George's supporters were disappointed. The Queenslander is yet m the novitiate stage, and it must be remembered that he struck an old stager m Hegarty, the bullet-headed bruiser from New. Zealand, m the final. The isf.Z. man, apart from being a tough contract m appearance, has many years' ex- . perience to back it up. Several times he has been the New Zealand featherweight champion, while m 1909 he 1 won the championship of Australia m that class. Last year he defended that title against Jack Reid (New South .Wales), and the decision went to the Cornstalker by a very narrow margin. Reid has been m the professional ranks a little short of 12 months, and as well as polishing off the best that could be produced, he has now been matched by the Mclnstoush to fight Hughie Mehegan for ' t the light-weight championship, all of. j which reflects with credit on Hegarty. Apart from this, Hegarty has had 36 fights m his career, and his only de- . feat was at the hands of Jack Reid.
