ON THE ROLL.

A Sample of Somebody's Slovenliness

A resident of Wellington, whose name is on the Wellington Centra) electoral roll, has shown us a notice of objection to enrolment which he has received bearing the rubber stamp lac simile signature of G- (i - Hodgkins, registrar of electors for that district. The document m question informs the addressee that "LTaje&s the annexed notice of appeaJ* is signed by you and returned to me within SEVEN days from this date, your name will be removed rrom the roll." The document is dated September 7, so that tho registrar intimated his intention to remove the addressee's name from the roll unless an enclosure was returned to him not later t-hau September 14. We have m our possession the covering envelope, on which tho postmark plainly shows its receipt by tho postal department as September y>, HMO p.m., so that it could by no possible means reach the addressee until utter the lost

date which the registrar of electors had given him to return the enclosure. Presumably, the addressee's name has now been removed from the roll, and, as he has not complied with an obviously impossible request of the registrar, he has no right iof appeal. We do not know the (merits of this particular person's claim to be on the roll, or of the registrar's objection to his enrolment, but we are constrained to reImark that, if this is a sample of the manner m which the rolls are hacked about, it is little wonder one i hears of so much complaint of im- ! proper disfranchisement.
