A short time ago there was a great hubbub m the City Council regarding the action of. Councilor. J. B. cS-hack-lock, who,' while a member of the Electric Light and Power .Cpmmittee, had taken: part m the deliberations regarding the 1 purchase of goods from the firm of H. E. Sbaeklock and Co., of which J. B, is a member. The matter was taken up by* a ratepayer, one James* Connor, . on' whose application Magistrate Widdowson agreed to hold an inquiry to determine whether or not J. B. had forfeited his seat by tiis< action. Further action m the matter was promised, and it is now announced that^Councillor W. Downie Stewart is also to come before the Magistrate, Mr Connor again being the person asking for the inquiry. Councillor Stewart is a shareholder m the Dunedin;. Engineering and Steel Co., and a member of the same committee as' 1 ' Councillor .Shacklock ; and he is charged; with having assisted the committee to deliberate on payments of £705 7s 9d and £16 12s to the" company. ■ .

On Tuesday Magistrate Wfckdowson decided that a summons should issue against Councillor Stewart, and the hearing of the case was set down for .p^eenMjer 1, on which date it has also -been decided to hear the case against Councillor Shacklock.
