Robbery with Violence.

Man Gaoled for Eighteen Months.

1 ?A : t the criminal sittings of the Su>jipreme Court at Wellington, before; tris Honor the Chief Justice (Sir ..Robert Stout), on Monday last, John was indicted for (1) rob*ing Samuel Good of £5 6s, with personal violence ; (2) robbing Samuel Good of £5 6s, m company with another man (name unknown) ; (3) assaulting Samuel Good with intent to rob him ; (4) assaulting Samuel Good ; and (5) stealing £5 6s from Samuel Good. All five counts arose out of one transaction, the commission of which was alleged to have taken place at Wellington on August 16".

Mr T. Neave prosecuted for the Crown, and Mr R. B. Williams appeared for the accused.

Five jurors were, ordered to stand <aside by the Crown:, and five jurors were challenged by the accused, thtting the striking of- the jury. Briefly, it appeared that about 4 p.m. on August 16, Samuel Good, a went into the .Cambridge Hotel m Kent-terrace and had a drink. While paying for it %c took a sovereign front his pocket, m which he had £5 6s iri.all., Accused was standing alongside him. Good went to the rear, and accused almost immediately followed, him. At the rear Good was Assaulted by one man, and robbed of £5 6s by another man, neither of whom he. saw. Shortly afterwards, accused unceremoniously rushed into a smithy adjoining the hotel without any apparent rhyme or reason. Sul> sequently he was arrested, and then denied haying been m the hotel. At tlie close of the Crown case, Mr Williams addressed the jury without calling any evidence for the defence.

The jury retired at 3.13 p.m., and later on returned a verdict of guilty. On Wednesday, the Chief Justice sentenced Harrison to 18 months' imprisonment. '
