IN CHARITY'S NAME.
• • A woman garbed as a nurse is bailing up all ana sundry m various parts of New Zealand, on hehalf of an art union that is said to be run m connection with some pictures by an Auckland artist. The artist is a lady, and a tale is pitched about a sick child. This, combined with the nurse's rig-out, seems to do fche trick, if people do not hand out a shilling straight away to get rid of the importuning female. There seems to be no knowledge of how many tickets there are, and no certainty that the su'-scri 1 er will see a list of the winning numbers. The only guarantee seems to be an assurance that the Colonial Secretary has given his permission to hold the art union, and that is no guarantee. From appearances the thing is a licensed cadge. It is about time Auckland was asked to maintain its own charities. The nurse was m Ch.ristchurch when last heard of. ,
