Fined Under the Gaming Act. In its hysterical efforts to -work up a circulation, the "New Zealand Times,'' m September of last year, instituted an illegal guessing /competition. For running this lottery, the Crown Law Department proceeded against Pierce C. Freeth, man-aging-editor of the "N.Z. Times," on the following charges :—(1) Having, on September 1, 1909, established a lottery; (2) established a scheme hy which prizes of money were competed for by a mode of chance; (3) conducted a scheme hy which prizes of money were, competed for by mode of chance ; (4) agreed to dispose of money amongst divers persons, by means of a device whereby such money was to be divided by chance. Similar charges were also preferred against the "N.Z. Times" Co., Limited. On Monday last,' when the. cases, came before Mr HaseWen, S.M., '.the Crown Prosecutor, Mr M. Myers, elected to proceed on the charge of establishing a scheme, etc., and to this charge Mr Dalziell, who appeared for the defendant, entered a plea of guilty. He. pointed out that the "Times" Co. had to bear the cost of an application to the Supreme Court for a declaratory judgment, which Mr Justice Cooper declined to give, and that the "Thhes 11 were also paying the costs of the present proceedings. On the charge of establishing a scheme, Freeth was fined 40s and costs. On a similar charge, the company was' fined Is and costs. ' The' other charges were- withdrawn.
