The motto of Edinburgh city is : "Nisi Dominus frustra" ("Unless the. Lord be with us we strive m vain"). In order to gain admittance to the Edinburgh High School it is. necessary to pass an entrance examination. Upon one occasion, when the son and heir of a peer of the realm was a candidate, a question set was: "What is the meaning of the motto, 'Nisi Dominus frustra' ?" A bright youth, observing the superintendent, of the examination giving sundry hints to the youthful sprig of nobility, gave, as his answer, '-Unless you are a lord, or a lord's son, it's no use cor-vpetinff."
