PREACHER'S SHAME.

Here is Your Burden of Sin.

* At a Mission Meeting. A dramatic and extraordinary incident occurred during the progress of a great mission meeting m Chicago. For five years a certain' preacher has been Known for his zeal m relieving the poor and making converts. The other night he stood before an immense congregation m the Union Mission Hall and exhorted sinners to come forward, and "to lay down their burden of sin" m order that they might be forgiven r , Among the penitents was a young woman. The preacher did not .notice her until he heard her exclaim, "Here's your LITTLE BURDEN OF SIN." As she spoke ' she placed a bundle at his feet. He gazed at her m terror as from the bundle came the pathetic wail of an infant. "Here is your child," the woman said; "you would not support it, and JL cannot support it any longer." Indescribable confusion overcame the meeting. The women present raised the baby, to whose clothes was pinned the following note:— "The father of this infant is one of th« leading men m your work. 1 love my baby better than life itself, and have tried to keep it, but cannot. The father refuses to help *- me. What can Ido ?" A signature followed While the note was being read the mother disappeared. The preacher, says the "Daily Mail" correspondent, turned to the dispersing congregation. "The WOMAN TEMPTED MfcJ," he quoted, "and I fell. I have been a back-slider, but am whole again, and have returned to the Christian life." But tha congregation streamed out with nothing but looks of scorn for the man " to whom they had listened so devoutly a short while before.
