REITERS ROT.

A Canterbury Candidate's Cussedness.

Domett Does Itself Proud.

The election campaign has started already m Canterbury. A candidate descended on Domett the other night. He is ?_n anti-prohibitipnist from Scargill, named Reiter, and as Domett hadn't had any excitement since the last dog-fight, the population rolled up en masse for. the entertainment! Reiter is the sort of person who amuses, and the audience didn'tcare what his politics were so long as his fund of unconscious humor held out. Re-, marks that earned an uproarious encore were those directed against the shallow, cold-tea persons who desire to rob a ( poor working-man of his beer. The denunciation of Tommy Taylor as a dry advocate earned shrieking applause, and a pause m the proceedings while Reiter produced a flask and imbibed liquid • refreshment therefrom was filled with screaming expressions of approval, while demands for a swig were met with a dignified negative. The questions at the close brought the brains of Domett to the surface, like the flushing system stirring up' the microbes m a septic tank. Instance '.— Are you m favor of females over 60 being exterminated ? — Certainly hot. Should a deceased person marry his wife's sister?— Let him please himself. What is your definition of a mpderate drinker ?— Let each find his own ' limit with the aid of a gallon of beer. Are you m favor of a daily fast train service between Christchurch and London '—(Candidate gives it up). What is your opinion ABOUT THE ABOLITION OF BARMAIDS ?— Let each man marry his own barmaid. Do you favor Tommy Taylor's Gold Board Bill ?— What is that? ' A prohibition scheme ?— Oh, yes, I know. To hell with Taylor and his Bill. A vote of thanks and confidence m the candidate was carried amidst a scene of wild enthusiasm, but a collection to defray expenses panned out most of the buttons m the settlement. The crowd, however, accompanied the candidate to the railway station and saw him off, to the accompaniment of lout! rv,Tcssion.s of joy. Doiuctt did itself proud.
