CANCER AND ITS CURE.

The Prince of Wales, presiding at a meeting of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, said that although many facts had been ascertained, nothing yet justified tke hopes of a new treatment. ;

The above cablegram published m the daily press during the Ytyeck is of significant importance to the people of 'New Zealand, m which territory the cancer-cure charlatan and quack is flourishing m all his ignominious infamy. It is against these specious scoundrels that this paper has waged an unceasing; warfare, and tke above cablegram ought to act as a strong corrective" to the weak-minded and easily-gulled fool .who vainly ' imaiy net:' that^ the c<uac,k * Vi^o, combining, "as'lie-TJoes too often, religion with his hyprocritical and "fraudulent practices, sets out m glowing terms m newspaper and other advertisements that by the aid of prayer, the exercise of some mysterious magnetic healing power, and by other impossible and incredible means, affects that which the greatest living scientists are forced to admit continues to baffle them. In New Zealand, unfortunately, the cancer quack has taken deep root, and it is a sad commentary on the existing state of the Law, that though it is prompt to pounce upon and punish ,ths paltry sneak thief these swindling humbugs are allowed to nursue . their evil courses unckecked; that nothing can be done, or is done till a ;victim is hurried to the grave, and whose death is accelerated by the quack's vile and monstrous treatment. As a drowning man will snatch at a straw, so too will the victim of the deadly cancer scourge madly embrace any possible chance of prolonging his life. Where all that Science can do has failed, or has only allowed temporary relief, the quack of marvellous magnetic healing power is tried as . a last hopeless resource. Then it is last and 'hopeless resource. Then' it is that the victim's condition becomes a thousand times worse. The quack leech-like sticks to his victim till he has bled him of every penny. He leaves him a financial and ohysical wreck, and the law refuses to act un+il the quack succeeds not only m robbing the victim of his money, but m actually taking his life. * •■ • . ■ • That this is the case nearly every sane man and woman m New Zealand knows. Universal, however, as may he the knowledge of the mercenary and murderous manner and methods of the cancer cure quack, it is \ a matter to marvel at that he prospers and thrives, and even of his adversity maices capital, by posing as a martyr of a cruel law that is raised 1 as, a barrier to progress and enlightenment". Perhaps the most peculiar form of cancer cure' adopted by the charlatanic crowd m New Zealand is that known as magnetic healing* It is a kind of laying-on of hands. The magnetic healer poses as a specially Divine inspired and gifted individual. Many of them are harmless cranks ; but harmless as they may be they are capable of becoming dangerous humbugs who. if encouraged, will prey on" credulous Society. It is the magnetic healing crank who often invokes th>e help of the Omnipotent to help him effect his cures. Credulous folk, too blind to perceive that their feelings are being played upon, give too 'ready credence to stories of removed cancer. Patients are exhibited as having been cured of cancer, who, m reality suffered from some harmless aulictiotj, but too of-f-en the fact is that a genuine case lof the scourge is made -more malignant and more deadly. We -hear of the cures ; the failures, the miserable death dealing failures, are carefully suppressed.
