MANAWATU SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES.

When the nominations for the above event fell due it wa.s found that there were numerous sires, which, contrary to anticipations, were not entered. A lot of owners who were not brainy enough to see the ; value of such an event to 1 the sire of the- winner, and . evidently grudged • the nomination . fee , failed .to entet ..their stallions, -. At the last Manawatu me^tin^ Ihese. individuals came m for a good deal of raillery and it eventually dawned upon them that they. were ill-advised m keeping their sires out of the event. As a number of them were anxious to have' the nominations reopened, the racing, club sent the following • circular to . the owners of 1 sires already entered.: THE MANAWATU SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES, 1908 AND 1909. Dear ■ Sir,— A number of owners from various cau^-s omitted to enter their stallions m these races, and are>ndw anxious to j?ain entry. At ■our last 'autumn meeting several owners who 1 have nominated expressed their entire willingness to permit the re-opening of the nominations so as to allow their entries Ming taken, provided a definite closing date is named, and that we are able to gain the 'Consent of every owner who has already made entry. ' * I would like to point out that the inclusion of mote sires m these races is a distinct benefit to the horse owner, as all the sires' subscription money goes to the raoe fund, and the Club does not receive' any monetary benefit, (by the re-opening) thereby. If you are prepared to give your consent to this proposal, will you kindly sign^ and return the enclosed letter to us on or before the 25th .instant.— Yours faithfully, J. M. JOHNSTON, - Secretary. As all the parties interested were agreed on the matter, fresh nominat ons were taken, and a, number of breeders who had failed tp enter their stallions !in the first instance took advantage of the extended opportunity.. The unanimous acv tioii o! thp parties who nominated m the first- instance is sportsmanlike and • commendable, but the racing club scarcely appear justified m- asking consent to such a proposal. The event was notified m the columns of several papers, and if it failed to attract entries : : through faulty ■ advertisinp. or. because certain owhers are not intelligent enough to see its value, th«n tiie alteration should have been eSected when the nominations for the second, stakes fell due, but not before./
