OPERA HOUSE.

11 Brigadier Gerard.".

1 Sir f A"rthiur Conan Doyle's romantic comedy, "Brigadier Gerard" was staged for the first time m New Zealand at the Opera House on Tuesday night, aijd the public , appreciation of Mr Julius Knight and the English Company supporting him, has been amply testified to by the enthusiastic reception wMch the comedy was accorded and continued to receive on subsequent nighls. Indeed the production was eagerly awaited and needless to remark everybody was perfectly satisfied. Everybody isn't m love with soldiers and their gallant deeds, but nobody can help beine m deep sympathy with the brave, gallant and dull-witted Captain Gerard, who, for his valiant acts and devotion to the Emperor Napoleon is made a Brigadier, and receives the hand of the fair Comtesse do Rociu, elaure. The Captadn, or Brigadier, notwithstanding all his bombast and conceit, is a devil-may-care fellow, and a gentleman. Mr Julius Knight has portrayed the character to .perfection. Another perfect study is that of Talleyrand, by Mr Leslie Victor, and the manner m which the Captain, with the aid of the Comtessc, turn the tables on that f;ly old fox by shutting him up m a cabinet which the traitor is sending back to the Emperor he has .abandoned,, :is one of the best situations of the play, which will be sta ; v"l for the last time this evening.

The season will close next Tuesday evening, and the farewell production is to be the revival of "Monsieur Beaucaire" on- Monday and Tuesday evenin/rs next. This dainty and.brilliant little play offers a large scope for Mr Knight's undoubted abilities, and nobody should miss the opportunity of learning how polite and' gallant everybody was at Bath m 1735.
