SHOP-LIFTING.

The amount ..■■.of. stuff the female shop-lifter can get away With when she is really ouit for business is something for the mere male to marvel at. A lady of this character recently made a raid upon the premises of Messrs Warnock and Adkin, the Lambton Quay) drapers. She only managed to stow away m her underclothing a fur necklet, four feathers, a roll of plait, some children's bonnets and a laidy's hat-. Had there been a grindstone, or a sewing; machine about she would probably have had that. When brought before Dr. McArthut on a charge of stealing the ■ fur, she • was given another chance as she was "under the influence" at the time of the lapse. Although the firm are great sufferers from these petty thieves they div not press the charge m this instance, but extracted a promise from the woman that she would take the pledge— an infinitely more sensible and iiiumane plan than asking for a severe punishment.
