WICKED WAIMATE.

Waimate, the little town down south) is 'getting its reputation smearedi as a place, of sobriety and propriety. The local 'Tiser has been having a cut at the young men who pass their time m pubs, and also at the insSdious shouting ha-bit which leads to .a person drinking more than he requires, and lo a ding up half-a-dozen full-fledged thirsts for next morning. The devil's distilleries at Waimate are going bard- and strong just now, and tbe scribe rightly thinks that thirty drunks .m the, public thoroughfares at -..ninh't is rather too strong. That was the number -he counted at all events, but perhaps he saw double. However, regret, is expressed by the 'Tdser chap that souls should he sent to perdition by the bydro-ibea'ded demon hops m this wholesale fashion, and the straying ones are besought to turn away from the peril that menaces them and seek amusement m their own homes, or words to that effect. Well, some of the (homes m Waim-a_te and elsewhere are nice places fon men to get out of, and -when there's a domestic tongue tournament on the man seeks sdtace somewhere else and bobs up serenely later on. The pub isn't the place of sin and iniquity that some make it out to be, but when a chap gets too muoh grog attoa^rd things aren't what they should be. Mr Publiohouse has always been adjured to "take care of himself" latterly by people who oan't take care/of . themselves worth a cocoanut, but if Waimate gots ov a bender on Thursday and Saturday nights, and cavorts round singing hymns late 'at night, and jovially pulls down paling fences for morning firewood, and acts the goat generally, then it is time somebody .took a pull«,
