A QUAINT RAG.

A Waimate Paper's Funny

Little Ways.

The editor of the "Waimate Advertiser," m an editorial m last Sat' urday's issue, commenting on "brink m Waimate;" says :— "The editor of ttoe 'Advertiser' had ocoasion— quite by accident— to make the round of [some hotels (and other places where men congregate) just at 11 o'clock." Of course "there is nothing wron<g with an editor ■bus'tiling; round on a Saturday "night for a night-cap before shutting up time, but there really seems no need for him to advertise the fact. Anjtrow, there was no need for the Waimate man to mention his excursions at all, because the following paragraph, clipped from "the samel issue, proves conclusively that such a< statement is entirely superfluous. Tfle paragraph refers to a presentation made to a departing citizen. Here it is :— "A pleasing function took place last evening m the Borough Council Chambers when a .presentation was made to Mr A. S. Henderson who is leaving Waimate after a residence of two years here. About 3 business people < were present. \ Mr W. Coltm&n who was voted to the ctiair, spoke of Mr Hendesonr's unfailing courtesy -and attention to tha Banks clients. Though they were losing a valuable Bank official and a worthy resident yet they must congratulate Mr Henderson on his wellearned romotpio. He had much leas pure m handing -him a silver afternoc* toa service and a urpse of spver-t eigns as a token of the respect m whicbhe as held toy "the people of Wai Imate." .' -..,,.■■■ It looks as though the editor of the "Advertiser" sets his own copy, and -mostly does the setting after he has "made the round of some hotels -f-quite by accident.'' What sort. of a turn-out was , it at all tJiat was' represented by THREE business people and where were the others, anyhow. This paper doesn't know what a 'romofpio" is, but it heartily joins with the "Advertiser" and congratulates Mr Henderson upon having earned it. We trust it is something nice. Also a " urpse" ■of sovereigns sounds well, and we can quite understand the Chairman having much "leas pure" m handing ove such a thing. How would that particular issue of tlre^'Advertiser'* have been as an exhibit among the "sweated industries" Lboks as if th pne man had to write the article, set the type, read the proof, and print the paper, besides doing the rounds of some of the ''hotels. The Editor has our sincere ; sympathy. , ;
