KEEPING A BROTHEL.

FRED FLOYD FINED.

An Offer to Leave the City.

A little house of convenience, situated at 13 Taranaki. Street, was the subject of a Police Court prosecution on Monday last, when one Frederick Henry Floyd was charged with having kept a brothel on April 20. Floyd is a chimney-sweeper by profession, and the assignation house business seems to have been a side 'line, and "as it got a bit too glarimr, the police interfered and warned Floyd, but their warnings were unheeded, and Floyd, therefore, had to make his bow to the beak accordingly. Apparently, he had not much hope of escape, as he pleaded guilty, or at least Mr Wilford, who appeared for him, did.. Hfe had no extenuating eircums tandes to bring forward, and Mr Wilfottl could only say for him that he had been 14 years resident m the city, and the only offeace of which he had ever been guilty was ' FOR SUPPLYING SWANK EY to\ some individual whom the ' Law had prohibited Horn shikkur. For 30 years he had led, an honorable citizen's life, and he realised how serious was the offence charged against him. It was< not a brothel m the ordinary sense, the offence consisted m room-lettinr, and Fldyd would leave the town if necessary, and discontinue for ever the business he had carded on, Sub*ln-specjtor o 'Donovan said Floyd 1 had carried on a similar bawdyhouse business m Tory-street before he took on the Taranaki-street concern. He let rooms to prostitutes, atod the police had warned him 'before, but he had taken no notice whatever. It was difficult, to "get into the house, as a pass-word was used. Floyd was willing, he said, and was m a position, to pay a sub. stantjal fine. .* ' A fine of £3;0 was inflicted. The police withdrew a charge of assisting m the management of, the concern preferred against the ' wife^. as any penalty imposed would have to be paid by the husband.
