SLY-GROG INFORMERS.

Ashburton people are just now wondering what sort of a , Police Force New ; Zealand will have m time to Vome, if the authorities go on augmenting it from the ranks of the sly-grog informers, as has been done lately. §ome time ago two poiice recruits named Wilson and Penhallriach were sent from Wellington to Ajxhburton to catch sly-groggers. They were supplied with 'funds with which to play billiards and buy illicit beers and whiskies when they could get them. They obtained the liquor all right, and for their smartness is persuading; a fellow-citizen to break : the law they are ndw fullblown members of the force. Another instance is a curly-headed youth named Brown, or Gillett, who warmed himself into the affections of an Ashburtonite, and obtained a, bottle of ' beer or some sort of' swanky off him. Of course tiie cove got fined, and Brown got a billet as a policeman. A man can't have too many tickets on himself when he has to pimp on a pal, and get him jug to obtain a billet. The majority of men would sooner break stones than get a crust by such means. A force composed of 'these sort of pimps can never be much credit to the colony.
