NOTES AND COMMENTS

There is very - little doing in the racing world this week, the only meetings scheduled being one-day fixtures at Ashburton and Wairio,

The weights tor the Wellington meeting issued yesterday morning met with favourable comment, the general feeling being that Mr H. Coyle had carried out his task with great credit. It is expected that M. McCarten will come back to New Zealand shortly. He is coming over to fix up his affairs, and then he will return to the other side and remain there permanently.

• There is a rumour going the rounds that another stipendiary steward is to be appointed. Ballymoy 11. has always shown she was partial to the Trentham course, and with 7.6 in the Telegraph Handicap ‘she will be one of the fancied division. ,

The imported horse Royal Divorce, after a season at stud, is to be put back into work again under the care of Captain J. Gage Williams, at Trentham^

The stewards of the Northland Trotting Club are under a deep debt of gratitude to the Wellington owner, Mr J. R. McKenzie, who sent his champion pacer, Great Bingen, to compete at the meeting on Saturday.

Nincompoop, who won a Breeders’ Plate at Randwick, was a failure after that race. He has now found his level down the West Coast. On Saturday he scored again, and on-this occasion had 11.5 in the saddle. The Taranaki writer who commented upon Barry’s handling of Euphonium in the Stratford Cup forgot to bring out the fact that Barrv had the “right of the road,’’ and that -the rider of Royal' Mint came over on Euphonium when less than the requisite two lengths in front. Steamers from Sydney and Melbourne this week will bring quite a number of the racing fraternity to Wellington. The Trentham meeting

and the sales of blood stock are the attractions.

Mr AY. R. Kemball has brought the English stallion Cape Horn for his stud. The imported horse had quite a number of mares at Otatara this season.

Agrion is to make his next appearance in the Champagne Stakes at Dunedin. J. Barrv lias been offered the mount on the Limond two-year-old.

Bevis is now being raced by the Hawera trained, J. Brown. He still gives his trainer some trouble with his heels, but Brown seems to have mastered the complaint.

A horse much discussed in Taranaki at the present time is Benzora, who js engaged at Traptham. He was paid up for both days at Stratford, but was not started. At Trentham Benzora is engaged in the Telegraph Handicap with the minimum weight. Mr J. Todd, who paid 1000 guineas for Paleta in fhe spring must, after the three successive wins of the two-year-old, bo well on the way to getting square on the transaction. Paleta is giving away 131 b to his nearest' opponent in the Fitzherbert Handicap the first day at Trentham.

The Trentham trainer, D. McCauley, did not win more than his share of thq money on his West Coast jaunt. Races are very hard. to win down that region now.

A yearling that is highly spoken of in Taranaki is a filly by Chief Ruler out of Silver Link, and thus a halfsister to Silvermine. Judging by the weights that being allotted to Fool’s Paradise in 'Sydney, his new owner will be very fortunate to get the two thousand guineas back ho paid for him in November.

M. McCarten was in Perth. over the holidays, and the trip would be a paying one, for be rode five winners in three days. Count Cavour, who claims an engagement in the ' Wellington Cup, has never shown anything like his best form at Trentham. At Ellerslie, Riccarton, and AVingatui he always manages to win races. The chestnut will, have to be at his top to win the Wellington Cup. The New Plymouth owner, Mrs W. D. Grahnm, has two nice sorts of yearlings.- On© is by General Labour— Cherry Roe (a half-brother to Cherry, •Ripe) and the other is by Chief Ruler —Wake Up. The crack mile performer Reremoana is engaged in the sprint events at Trentham, but whether ho will run has' not yet been decided. It is said that within a very short time one of the best known of our jockeys will enter into double harness. On the'course at Hawera a new totalisator house is under construction. The new building is on the same lines as that at A wap uni, with the excep- . tion it will not be electric. The job will he completed before the summer meeting next month. Though the Foxton meeting clashes with Trentham there is .material enough for a very successful fixture. There are only two three-year-olds in the Wellington Cup. Seatown, with 7.13, is rated six pounds better than Hynanna. Lysander will have to shoulder the full penalty if he contests the Wellington Stakes. There is no reason why he should not run, as the opposition is not extra strong. / Miss Mercia, an Australian-bred two-year-old in E. George’s stable*, was injured during the Auckland trip, and will have to be spelled. This is had luck for her owner, as the’youngster was due to win a race in the near future.

So far Mr John A. Taylor has to win a race with his imported horse Royal Picture. The grey will probably be racing at Trentham. and one race he claims an engagement in is the richly endowed Douro Cup.
