{Written for the “ N.Z . Times”) The little laughing lad you see With curls of palest gold, Though flower-fresh his young frame be • Is old, O eery old. For knowledge bom of loss and gain With him he surely brings; And wisdom won from joy, from pain. Deep in his heart it sings. Those dancing, glancing mirth-bright eyes — Still them, and you shall read As in night’s star bespangled skieg Profundities indeed. 'Tis given me by him to stand, To fathom his intent, Help him to swift and full command Of this new instrument.
