“MARINES AND CRAYFISH”

IN OLD CEMETERY BUILDING NOT*ORIGINAL CHAPEL. The cemeteries committee reported to the City Council last night that

they had appointed the chairman (Councillor Troup), Councillor Burns, and Mr W. A. Edwards (Early Settlers' Association) as the committee to control the Bolton street cemetery and chapel on the lines already approved by the council. “Has it any historical value?” asked Councillor H. D. Bennett in reference to the chapel. The Church of England, he said,. did not attach the value to it that some thought they did. He was keen not to upset the feelings of the eeydy settlers, but he would- like to be sure that sufficient investigation had been. made. He had been creditably informed that the building was just a wing which had been added to the original building which had long since disappeared. Councillor J. Burns said he was surprised to hear that this was not the original building; he had all along thought it was. He had at one time been of the opinion that the building should be demolished, as it used to be surrounded by “dead marines,” crayfish shells ond waste paper. Then, however, came the movement to renovate and preserve the building. He thought more information might be obtained. Councillor Troup said the fact remained that the Early Settlers’ Association attached great sentimental value to the building. The Mayor wondered if «»iis would take any power out of the hands of the council, but he said there was another side to it, and in some respects, as court records would show, the area was not an asset to the city. He had spent a great deal of thought in an endeavour to see what could he done—by lighting or in any other way.
