STREET PAVING

ATTENTION TO BY-STREETS SCHEME BEIKgTpuSHED AHEAD. While the "Wellington City Council is pushing ahead with its general paving scheme in the city and suburbs, it is making an endeavour, at the same i time, to improve many of the bystreets. This was evidenced last evening ing, when the council, at the instance of the works committee, decided that authority be granted for the expenditure of £3OOO in surface sealing about three milee of certain of the subsidiary streets in the city, and that tenders be called for this work. The streets concerned in the scheme are:—Hataitai: Hataitai road to Arawa road; Waitoa road, Hataitai road to Waipapa road. Kelburn : Kelburn parade to Fairlie terrace; Upland road from Glasgow street to cable tram terminus. City: Lower Hill street, Hawkestone street, Murphy street, Mulgrave street, Moturoa street, Davis street, Hobson street, Palmer street, Upper Abel Smith street. Northland road, and Fitzherbert street (one side). Councillor H. D. Bennett said that this surface sealing was following an experiment that had been made in respect to surface sealing in two places. The cost of surface sealing would work out at approximately one-third of the cost of ordinary metalling, working out at less than £IOOO a mile. The expenditure of Is a yard would save a considerable amount of expenditure, especially in hilly parts and would also tend to eliminate the dust nuisance. It was not intended that the money necessary for the work should be taken out of loan authority. The scheme would he financed out of money refunded by the City and Suburban Highways Board—something like £l7oo—and the general programme would in no way be interfered will. The streets mentioned were approximately three miles in length, with a square yardage of about 00,000 square yards, and would cost approximately £3OOO.
