GOSSIP OF THE TURF

By

"CARBINE"

The C..T.C. meeting will be concluded to-morrow. The chief event nt Jliccarton to-mor-row will be the Stead Memorial Gold Cup, which will ho run over a mile and a quarter, at weight-for-age. As a fipld of ‘'class*' horses will go to tlie post the contest should be one of the best in the history of the race. Commendation and Rercnioana will bo the favourites. Wireless has been utilised during the past week for the dissemination of race results. It wa» used on New Zealand Cup Day, and proved very satisfactory, and the decisions of the contests have been known all over New Zealand almost as soon as the horses have passed the post. In Wellington on Wednesday some of the results wen*. being handed round freely within a few minutes or the finish. "Phaeton" writes interestingly of past contests for the New Zealand Cup. He says:—The first New Zealand Cup run at Jliccarton under the Canterbury .Tockev Club was in 1883, when the Aus-tralian-bred horse Tasman won the race by a short head from the favourite, Nonsenso. The highest weight carried to victory in the Cun is 8.9, under which impost Tasman. Lady Zetland, and Sasanof scored in their respective years. Two dead-heats have been recorded for the Cup. In 1900 the judge was unable to separate FulfEien (7.10) nud Ideal (7.7), and in 1014 there was a similar record between Warstep (7.11) and Indigo (6.12 y In the race of 18SS the whole of the places in the Cup were monopolised by the- three-year-old division, viz.. Manton (6.10), Son of a Gun (6.5), and Exchange (6». Two English-bred horses in Locliiel and 'Frisco have won the New Zealand Cup. Both the horses named were sired in England and foaled in New Zealand. Bridge was given credit for winning the Cup of 1910 in 3min 25see, but Royal Star’s record in the same time two years ago is regarded as the most reliable. Martian heads the sire record for the New Zealand Cup with five''winners, his descendants being Ardenvohr, Menelaus, Sasanof, Vagabond, and Royal Star. Two descendants of St. Jaeger in Waiuku (8.6) and St. Paul (8.7) fought out tho issue for the leading place in the Cup of 1897, the first-named winning by half a length. In the race of 1883 the verdict was in favour of Tasman by a head; a similar distance separated Downfall and Heortlien in 1908: while in 1919 Midnight Sun. gained a half-head victory from Masterpiece. Lady Lucy, who won the Cup of 1909, was bought when a foal for 32 guineas. A brace of .embryo New Zealand Cup winners were sold under the hammer on the same day and on the same ground in. 1903. The English-bred 'Frisco was one, and the colt subsequently known as Downfall —who was in utero when sold —was the other. 'Frisco and Downfall won the New Zealand Cup in succeeding years. The four-year-olds have the most wins to their credit in the New Zealand Cup with a score of 13. The winners of that age, with their respective imposts, were: Spade Guinea, 6-10; Tiranfc d'Eau, 7.7; Grand Rapids, 8.5; 'Frisco, 7.6 (41b over l ; Downfall. 7.8: J.adv I.ucv, 7.1; Bridge, 7.10; Vice-Admiral, 7.8;" Midnight Sun, 8.0; Warstep, 7.11 <dead-heat-ed with Indigo); Ardenvohr, 7.3; Menelaus, 8.1; Scion, 7.10; The Banker, 8.1. Seven mares have won tho New Zealand Cup, viz.: Spade Guinea (1886), Kosefeldt (1893), Lady Zetland (1896), Tortulla (1901), Lady Lucy (1909), Sinapis (1913), and Oratress (1920). In addition Ideal ran a dead-heat with Fulmen in. 1900, and Warstep was responsible for a similar performance with Indigo in The most pronounced surprise reorder in connection with the New Zealand Cup was in 1906, when Star Bose beat the favourite, Multifid. In the race of 1886 the top-weight, Nelson, defeated all his opponents with the exception of Spade Guinea. &t three years old Euroclydon won the Cup, and in the following year filled the role of runner-up to Lady Zetland. io^ lzne ? A finislled second/or the Cup in 18S«, and two years after he ran a deadbeat with Ideal for first honours. Fulmen and Ideal, the dead-heaters tor the Cup of 1900, both ranked as outsiders B. Derrett steered the first two winners of the Cup, viz., Tasman (1883) and Vanguard (1884). On each occasion o-f the two tlcadheats being recorded for the New Zealand Cup North and South Island owners each claimed a horse in the deadheat. Tangihou, who won the Cup in 1915, was bought when a yearling for 80 ■ guineas by Mr L. G. McDonald, whose colours he carried to victory in the Biccarton race. iooJP ad ® Guinea, winner of the Cup of 1886, was owned and trained by R J Mason, who subsequently trained throe other winners of the Biccarton race in Lochiel, Grand Rapids, and Noctuiform. In the decision of the Cup of 1894 Impulse and Lottie, who were both owned in Auckland, finished first and second, respectively. ' Horses carrying less than 7.0 have won the Ivew Zealand Cup on eight occasions. ° In the Cup of 1915 a trio of five-year-nlds—Sinapis Sea Pink and Midnight bun-filled the places. There was a snmlav record in 1918, when .Sasanof, Ltoso Pink and Menelaus came home in that order. Horses of the "aged" division have proved successful in the New Zealand Lup only on four occasions, viz British Lmn (6.11) Lndy Zetland (8.9), Tangihou (6.i), and Sunart (8.3). Cables from London state that with a view to discouraging frivolous obiections tlie Jockey Club will require a *l° t eposit instead of J 1 5% and an addiu°/LH , i or an a PPcal instead of <£lo, both to be forfeited if the objection fails, fttewards will be empowered, in addition, to impose fines of LSO and £H}O respectively, if the objection and tlie appeal are frivolous. This season’s foalings in New Zealand include a filly by Chief R-uler from Gipsy Martian, and it is of interest, inasmuch as .Stormy, wno recently went to Australia, is al.-.u out of Gipsy Martian.' Stormy js evidently a docent galloper, as a forluight ago he won a Maiden handicap at Newcastle, and followed it up by taking the Novice Handicap at Singleton. Mr A K. Macomher, an American oil magnate, who has large racing interests in America and France, won the Cambridgeshire with the 50 to 1 chance Insight 11. last week. Mr Macomber won last year’s Cesarcwitch and Cambridgeshire with Forseli and Masked Marvel, respectively, and of his three entries for the Jailer race this time, he decided right ul ihe last moment in start Insight Jl. Jt was generally thought the

distance, nine furlongs, was too far for Insight 11.. hence his price; but cabled accounts of the race state that he was always well placed and won easily. He is a five-year-old bay gelding by sight from Court Dress, and was piloted by J. Thwaites, who was only engaged for him on the day of the race. S. Darling trains the winner, while S. Wootton looks after the second horse, Bulger, who started at 20 to 1, RAMPION*S~RECORD By his success in tho Victoria Derby, Rampion automatically went to the top of the list of Australia's great two and three-year-old stake winners. Until then Heroic held the record with <£24,543£, but, as the following records of both show, Saturday's success placed Rampion .£B4l above the Valais horse: — ' RAMPION. “ At Two Years.

HEROIC. At Two Years.

A GREAT BARGAIN Amounis has proved a great bargain at the 1800 guineas he cost Mr TV. Pearson in the autumn, as lie has started only six times in that owner's colours for four wins and J25972£ in stakes. The Epsom and Cantala Stakes winner, who was bred at the Kia-Ora Stud by Mr Percy Miller, is by Magpie from Loved One. by Duke of Melton out of Bui Bui, by Simile from Chand Be© Bee (imp.), and was bought for 300 guineas as a yearling by .T. W. Cook. .He did not race as a two-year-old until July, and had two unplaced outings at that age; but the following season won the first four races he contested. After his first two wins he was sold to Mr A. P. Wade for 2500 guineas, and contingencies, and for that owner he won the Hobartville Stakes. Rosehill Guineas and Batman Stakes. All told, Amounis lias started 19 times for the following wins: At Three Years.
