THORNDON SUB-STATION
MAYOR STARTS MACHINES HIGH PRAISE FOR OFFICERS. The Mayor, Mr C. B. Norwood, together with councillors and officers of the tramways, electricity, and other departments of the corporation, and representatives of the Metropolitan Vickers Company, visited the Thorndon electrical sub-station yesterday to start the wonderfully designed machines up and to declare the station open. The purpose of this sub-station is to supply power for tramway and other motor or lift purposes, by changing the alternating power from Mangahao to direct current, alternating current being unsuitable for tramway purposes. That is also the purpose of the Riddiford street sub-station, Newtown, and will, again, be the work of the Karori sub-station when it Ib completed, hut the Thorndon station differs from the Riddiford street station in that the equipment is still more up to date, the very last word, in fact, in such plant. OFFICERS CONGRATULATED.
1 At the conclusion of the demonstration, the Mayor congratulated Mr M. Cable, general manager of the department, and members of liis staff on the most satisfactory manner in which they had carried out tho installation of Wellington’s up-to-date electrical equipment. As to the equipment he had started up—well, he had started it, but he was a layman in such matters and could regard it only as a King of Marvels, a wonderful business, the product of wonderful minds. Air Cable briefly replied, thanking
the Mayor for his reference* to the staff of the department. In what had been said of his assistants he very heartily agreed; ho had a loyal and efficient staff. He would mention particularly in connection with tho work at Thorndon the good services given by Air R. s. Maunder, who generally supervised the erection of the plant; Mr J. C. Russell, who had had control of the laying of the high tension cables; Mr G. Lauchlan, for Ms work in connection with erection _ and installation of low tension wiring; Mr Baty, who assisted Air Maunder: and by members of the staff of the Metropolitan Vickers Company, which supplied the equipment. These gentlemen, said Mr Cable, had given .very valuable assistance in all work connected, with the plant. To Mr Aked. the conn- . oil’s architect and structural engineer he also wished to express the department’s thanks for the satisfactory design and supervision of the building itself.
