MR WM. WEIR’S WILL

EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE BEQUESTS HANDSOME LEGACY TO VICTORIA COLLEGE. The Victoria University CoUeaje Counoil has been advised by the Publio Trustee of the bequest made to the College Council by the late Mr William Weir. The terms of the will require that one-half of the residuary estate of the deceased shall be paid and applied in the purchase of a site for and the erection of a building, or buildings, for the purpose of a men’s residential college in connection with the Victoria University, and controlled by the Victoria University College Council. The remaining half of the residuary estate is to be held by the Public Trustee upon trust to pay and apply the income arising therefrom to and for the maintenance and endowment of the residential college referred to, far the repair and upkeep of the building and it sequipment, for the establishment of bursaries, and generally for the benefit of the general purposes of Victoria Collego. The late Mr Weir has provided far certain legacies, which are to be paid out of the accumulated income from the residuary estate so far as the income will extend within certain restricted limits indicated in the. will. It is at present too early to state the amount of the residuary estate. It is expected, however, that tho net residuary estate will approximate £60,000. If this expectation is realised, £30,000 will within a few years be available to the Victoria College Council for the purchase of the site and erection of the men’s residential college, while the remaining £30,000 will be retained by the Public Trustee in terms of the will, and the income made available from time to time as the University Council by its resolution directs and appoints. In addition to the above bequests the following charities are mentioned: — (a) Presbyterian Orphanage at Wellington, £SOO, to be paid not later than four years after the decease of the testator. (b) Anglican Boys’ Home at Lower Butt, £SOO, to be paid not later than four years after the decease of the testator. (c) Wellington Boys’ Institute, £SOO, to be paid not later than four years after tlia decease of the testator. (d) Wellington Society for the Relief of the Aged Needy, £SOO, to be paid not later than four years after the decease of the testator. (e) Soots College at Miramar, Wellington, the sum of £IOOO, to be paid not later than four years after the decease of the testator. (f) Dr. Barnardo’a Homes, London, the sum of £IOO, to be paid not later than two years after the decease of the testator. The Public Trustee is tho executor nominated and, appointed under the will.
