BILLIARDS
INTER-CLUB AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP The commencement of this tourney, which is really the blue riband event m the local billiards world, took place at Messrs Billiards, limited, Showrooms last night. The first to oontest were Kvle, Petone Working Men's dub, and Bait of the Wellington Working Men’s dub. The latter was the quicker in gauging the spread of the balls ■ and the speed of the table, and quj.ckly drew ahead. When Rait had acquired half his points Kyle commenced to play more confidently, and was not long in closing up the gap, reaching 286 when his opponent was 277. Rait then, with an unfinished 23, went out. The second game was between Treeman, of the Federal dub, an ex-cham-pion, and Savage, of the local Working Men's dub. Both players showed more confidence, and were cueing fairly freely. At half-way they were within two points of one another, and never more than a reasonable break separated them. Scores 280, 281. At this stage both played nervously, but Freeman had a little bit of luck. Final scores: Freeman 300, Savage 289. The best breaks were: Eait, 21, 23. 2L and 23 unfinished; Kyle, 36 and 20. Freeman, 32, 32, 50; Savage. 25. To-night at 7 o'clock Taylor plays Shanks, and at 8.15 Tucker, the present champion, plays O’Brien.
