MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS

PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY STATISTICS. The Petone Borough Council met laii night, the Deputy-Mayor (Mr C. P. Brocklebank) presiding. Also present were: Councillors D. McCarthy, E. Campbell, A. Scholefield, W. H. Edwards* \ H. Jay, V. Jacobsen, and G Cook. | UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF The secretary of the Wellington R.S.Awrote offering the sum of j6IOO for relief of the unemployment situation, providing the council subsidised the amount bv 30s in the pound. It was stated that tho offer had been accepted and the engineer had provided work for three men approved by the os* sociation. Preference was being given to married men. A communication was received front the Commissioner of Crown Lands relative to the exchange of land between the council and his department in connection with the Hutt Valley settlement scheme. After the plans were perused f the question was deferred pending » better understanding being reached. SUB-STATION AGREEMENT The Hutt Valley Power Board advised that it had appointed the chairman iMx A. J. McCurdyb Messrs XV. H. Barber* A. J. Hobbs, and the secretary (Mr H. D. Lodge) a deputation to confer with the council representatives in connection with the sub-station agreement. The Deputy-Mayor stated that the Power Board’s representatives had been interviewed in regard to the question, and they had enaeavoured to meet the council in every possible way. The board representatives demonstrated that they could produce current at a cheaper rate than the council could secure from any other source. INFECTIOUS DISEASES The borough inspector (Mr W. B, Gough) reported that 11 cases of infectious diseases were reported during the month, there being three cases of scarlet fever, five of diphtheria, two of pneumonic influenza, and one of tuberculosis. One case of pneumonic influenza in repect to an elderly lady, proved fatal. A total of 30 permits for the erection of dwellings, alterations, additions, etc., were issued during the month, to the total value of «£13.986. The fees collected amounted to <£43. The value of erections so far this year aggregated .£62,214* while the total fees collected amounted to JCI66. ROADING WORK The borough engineer (Mr A. Cowie) reported that during the month patching had been done in Cuba street. White’-- Line, and Adelaide street, and this treatment of the road surface would, be continued. He intended to metal the upper end of Nelson street and Islington reel, preparatory to tarring next summer. The Kmo Koro road* were now in fair order, and a man would be bought down to help on th* flat, at the same time making a general inspection of the district. The kerbing on tho Wilton! Settlement roads wa* almost completed, as also was the street formation work. Owing to the narrow nature of the side streets, he was conferring with the Public Works Department with a view in providing turning place# for motor vehicle*.
