COBHAM LANDS AMID DISORDER
EXCITED MELBOURNE CROWDS MANY INJURED IN STAMPEDE. •By Telegraoh.—Prats Assn. —Copyright. MELBOURNE, August 16. Disorderly scenes marked the arrival of Mr Alan Cobham on the completion of his flight. Fifteen thousand people were waiting at the landing ground at Essendon airdrome, and as Cobham was landing the mob broke the cordon and ran towards the machine. When Cobham unexpectedly turned towards the enclosure there was a frantic rush to get clear of the propeller. Many had narrow escapes. Slight damage was done to the machine, and a temporary broadcasting plant was trampled underfoot. The police available were quite inadequate to maintain order. Dozens of women and children were crushed in the crowd, and had to he treated at the ambulance station. The official welcoming party was swept away, and Cobham had to be rescued by Air Force men.
