KITCHENER’S?
BODY WILL BE EXAMINED POWER ASKED TO GIVE EVIDENCE MAY END CONTROVERSY By Telegraph.—Press Assn Copyright. (Sydney "Sun” Cable.) LONDON, August 15. The coffin containing’ the reputed body of Lord Kitchener was seized after a conference between the War Office and the Admiralty. It will be opened in the presence o‘f the coroner and officials at the inquest to-morrow, when Mr Frank Power will be invited to give evidenoe upon oatii. While the body was not in England, the authorities were unable to make inquiries, except through official Norwegian channels, which failed to substantiate Mr Power’s claims. An unwholesome controversy, holding all the ingredients of a public scandal, may now be definitely settled to the publio satisfaction, resulting in the final suppression of the legends associated with the fate of Lord Kitchener. DESECRATION? “DAILY MAIL” PROTESTS MEDDLINGG WITH WAR GRAVES. (Received August 16, 7.20 p.m.) LONDON, August 15. The “Daily Mail,” in a leader, says:
“It is a ghoulish act to exploit the fame of one of the greatest British soldiers. The Admiralty’s narrative of August 9th convinced all but the stupidly credulous that the stories of foul play -were utterly false and absurd. “This body-snatching from Norway verges on a public scandal. Whether British laws are at present unable to punish desecration or the graves of the noble dead remains to be seen. Otherwise, they should be strengthened, providing for exemplary punishment for unauthoritative meddling with war graves.” openingWcoffin POWER RAISES OBJECTION. (Received August 16, 7.20 p.m.) . LONDON, August IS. Detectives interrogated Power at length, and took possession of documents referring to the body. Power announces that he is applying to the High Court for an injunction to restrain the authorities from opening the coffin.
