NEW GOVERNMENT STEAMER An important, step in the history of the South Pacific. Islands, under New Zealand control. Ims been taken in the decision of the Government to secure a suitable steamer for administrative and other purposes. The steamer is to he motor-driven, the propelling power being supplied by two COO B.R.P. semi-Diesel engines. She is to he insulated for the carriage of fruit cargoes, and will be the first steamer to provide insulated transport in the New Zealand tropical fruit trade. Excellent berthing accommodation is provided on the mam deck amidships for 20 passengers, and m addition for an official suite on the bridge length is 2101't. breadth 3oft, depth 10ft, draught 14ft. The vessel is 1000 tons gross tonnage. The successful tenderer is the Dublin Dockyard Company, a subsidiary company of Messrs Vickers. Ltd., the well-known British shipbuilders. The contract price is about £55,000, and everything in connection with the ship is to be of British manufacture.
