OTAKI NEWS

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times” Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Otaki Chamber of Commerce was held last week, the president, Mr H. N. Fesrnley, presiding. In opening, be referred to the send-off to Captain Bax, which had passed off successfully. Correspondence was read from the Wellington Chamber stating that the local chamber’s letter relative to the hospital was outside their jurisdiction, therefore the letter was “received.” The president stated that in conversation with the local st-ationmaater (Mr Sargilsson) concerning better lighting facilities at the station, he had been informed that the chamber’s letter would be forwarded on. with the hope that improvement would be effected. It was considered advisable to affiliate with the Wellington Chamber, and the secretary (Mr Looser) was instructed to write for particulars. The question of holding an art union for the purpose ct raising money for effecting improvements in Otaki was briefly discussed, but it was agreed that the subject was too big to be dealt with by a small meeting, and consideration was therefore deferred till a later date. The secretary in the meantime will secure particulars that will be necessary to place before a meeting. The president welcomed Dr Slater, a new member of the chamber, while apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Messrs Brandon, Mitchell and Pole.

The president referred to a motion recently carried asking that the “Mail” to suppress names of speakers at chamber meetings, it being then pointed out that members in business who spoke their minds suffered in consequence. Mr Feornlev regretted _ that outsiders should he so narrow-minded and favoured mentioning names, stating that he considered it would be better for all once the feeling against sneakers was overcome. Members of the chamber only alluded and spokein the interests of the town. The matter was held in abeyance.
