YACHTING

PORT NICHOLSON CLUB PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES SUCCESSFUL SEASON’S SPORT A convivial evening was spent by members of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club on Saturday night, when the annual smoke concert was held, and the trophies won last season were distributed by Sir John Luke. During the course of the function a lengthy toast list was honoured, the programme being interspersed with enoyable musical items. Commodore D. K. Blair presided, and in extending a cordial welcome to the visitors expressed the desire that the friendly re ationsliip that existed, between the various yacht clubs in Wellington would continue to prevail. ACTIVITIES OF CLUB In outlining the activities of the club during the past season, he referred with regret to the loss they had sustained as the result of the death of the late Messrs T. Ronayne, C. Ei Finch, and J. R. McLean—three highly respected and enthusiastic supporters # of the club—and added) his sympathy with Mr John Breen, who was still confined to hospital by injuries sustained in an unfortunate yachting accident. So far as yachting itself was con oerned, he further explained it had been very successful, and only two accidents were recorded. Although the club did not succeed in annexing tho coveted Sanders Cup, the race proved to bo a magnificent one, and the Peggy, ho believed, would have captured the event but for a slight error of judgment. The big event of the yachting year was to be contested at Lyttelton during the coming season, and the club hoped to have some new boats competing. In every respect the Anniversary Day regatta proved a success, but a peculiar incident occurred in the fourteen foot class, the Peggy and Wellesley tieing for first honours. Owing to the fact that most of the boats were unavailable, the ocean race w'as abandoned, but it was intended to resume the event this year. In conclusion, the commodore pointed out that it had been decided practically that the Auckland and Wellington clubs possessing Royal charters should compete for the Tasman Cup, generously donated by Sir Joseph Ward* during the coming season.
