HOUSEHOLD HINTS
TO REDUCE KITCHEN CALAMITIES Much may b© done by the housewife to reduce breakages in the kitchen. For instance, by having the draining-board lined with rubber, the chance of cracked and chipped crockery is lessened; for even if articles are thrown down carelessly, their contact will be less violent. Care in the choice of teapots and jugs will have the effect of reducing the renewal bills. Jugs with the handles projecting as little as possible, or making one continuous line with tho sides, are much to bo commended. As for teapots, there is now a type oh-1 tainable with the spout hardly project- , ing, so that it would take a determined blow indeed to harm it in what is | usually its most vulnerable region. Cocoa and coffee pots with lids that are made separately, and hot water jugs with metal tops that fit on, must never be bung from the hooks of the shelves with their detachable parts in position. This is bound to lead to damage sooner or later :and a rule shone be made that all lids must be rested ( separately on the shelves. I A whistling kettle is a device flint obviates the danger of its being allowed to boil itself dry through the tori gctfulness of a servant who has been [ called l to another part of the house.
