THE WINTER SHOW
WELL AHEAD OF LAST YEAR SATURDAY’S SPLENDID RECORD WOMAN’S HAND CRUSHED On looking a little more closely into tho returns the attendances at the Winter Show on Saturday constitute a record, and were nearer 20,000 than 18,000, the receipts being in the neighbourhood of £BOO. For the seven days on which the show has been open the total receipts are now well over £7OO ahead of last year, and, judging by the attendance yesterday, public interest is by no means on the wane. The school children are taking full advantage of the stalls where samples and pamphlets aie given out, and both juveniles and adults are taking a great interest in the glass-blowing exhibit. The atmosphere generally of the Winter Show’ and the Industrial Exhibition is bright, for there is plentv of music, as there are pianoforte and Gramophone displays in each building. If the weather is inclement there is no need to leave the buildings, as lunch or afternoon tea can be obtained in either of them. Tlie home industries exhibits will nrobably ho removed to-day from the Winter Show, and will he replaced by new features. The work of the Technical School students finds admirers every day, and the touching exhibit, tho work of the young lad who was drowned at Island Bay in January, ovokes many expressions of sympathy. On Saturday night one of the demonstrators of an electric wringer, a woman, had the misfortune to get her hand crushed between the rollers. Although the crushing was severe, no bones were broken, and the woman pluckily remarked that that was good evidence of the guarantee that the machine would not break pearl buttons. Her injuries were attended to by the members of the St. John Ambulance Association, whose dressing station is near by. They have attended about 20 cases of various kinds.
The side-shows are doing good business, and on a percentage basis should bring substantial grist to the mill. The Red Cross station and restroom is in the Industrial Exhibition, and is doimr excellent work.
