CREDIT BY FRAUD
TWO SISTERS CHARGED ADVERTISED FOR LOANS. Por Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 19. Fraud by means of newspaper advertisements calling for loan of £7, “hnd wouild iopay £10,” was alleged against two sisters, Ida May Phyllis Birchell and Ivy Hazell Ada Birchell, in court to-day. The police stated the accused had secured £39 in this way, operating in Christchurch, Wellington, and other towns. They pleaded not guilty, and were committed for trial on charges of obtaining credit by fraud. The money was obtained from Margaret Roach (£9), John Leslie Prussing (£9), Mary Collins (£7), Rose Davies (£7), all of Christchurch, and Leslie Norgrove (£7), of Wellington. In each instance one of the young women is alleged to have pleaded that she had been ill, and promised to pay the loan back by instalments. As the result of the complaint by Mr Norgrove the accused were arrested.
