MONUMENT UNVEILED TRIBUTE TO MAORI CHIEF. Per Press Association. WHAKATANE, July 18. A monument to Ruumri Apantii. the lost of the big chiefs of tho Ngatiawa tribe, who could trace his descent back to the arrival of the big canoes, wav unveiled yesterday at the Poluituroa Rock, a rock of sacred memories to the Native people. There was a crowd of 2000 present, many Natives coming from other districts. Orations were made by Rangi To Aorere, Te Awekntuku (a chW of the Arawas), and Eru Timutnra (a chief of the Ngatiawas). Six chiefs, each representing ono of the canoes which brought the Maoris to New Zealand, held ribbons, and released the Red Ensign furled around the monument. The monument is a handsome Mark granite column, richly decorated in Native art. It testifies to the esteem in whiph the late chief was held. The Mayor (Mr W. Sullivan) and the county chairman paid a tribute to the loyalty and splendid character of Hurinui Apanni, and on behalf of tho European population complimented the Natives on the splendid memorial to this much-revered man*
