PARAMOUNT THEATRE

“THE BEAUTIFUL CITY.” Although Richard Barthelmess has been making pictures in or near New York City for almost his entire screen career, “The Beautiful City” is ' the first of his productions with a typical Manhattan background. The story was, in fact, inspired by New York, with its vivid contrast of wealth and poverty and its dramatic conflict of good and evil. “The Beautiful City,” which was written especially for Mr Barthelmess, is a dramatisation of the author’s first impressions of New York. It is the story of an Italian immigrant boy and his struggles to free himself from the gang feuds and sinister influences which surround the immigrant in the east side of Manhattan. It is Mr Goulding’s visualisation of America as a land of unlimited opportunity both for material and mental development. “The Beautiful City,” which was produced under the direction of Kenneth Webb, is a First National attraction. With Mr Barthelmess is Dorothy Gish, who is featured, and William Powell, another great favourite. It will be presented at the Paramount Theatre all this week. Also on the bill arc a gazette, a scenic, a Pathe Review, and a “Felix the Cat” cartoon, while the Paramount Orchestra plays delightful music.
