The British amateur golf championship has opened at Muirfield, East Lothian, Scotland. The following are results in the first round: — W. McCallum (Reading) defeated Major C. O. Hezlet (London), 4 up and 3 to play. A. Sinclair (Australia) beat A. G. Patterson (Weirside), 6 and 4. Francis Ouimet (U.S.A.) bent T. Williamson (East Kirkby) 7 and 6. A. D. D. Matkieson (Edinburgh), the ex-boy champion of England, beat J. G. Anderson (U.S.A.), 6 and 5. A. M. Vagliano (France) beat J. Caven (Renfrew), 1 up. R. H. Withered (Worphesdon) beat Ulmer (U.S.A.), 1 up. Jesse Guildford (U.S.A.) beat Birme, 7 and 6. Nallcain beat C. J. H. Tolley (Eastbourne), 4 and 2. R. Harris (London) beat T. A. Torrance (London), 3 and 2. W. B. Torrance (Edinburgh) beat Heatley, 2 and 1. Stuart Ross (Australia) scratched. W. B. Torrance, the Hou. Michael Scott, W L. Hope, Rex Hartley, and E. N. Layton, and tho Americans, R. R. Mackenzie, junr., G. von Elm, Jesso Sweetser, and Waldo all entered tho second round. SOME OF THE LOSERS Those defeated included J. G. Simpson, and tho Americans, Brooks, W. C. Fownes, Ryle, Itixey, and R. R. Mackenzie, senr. Harry Sinclair, the Australian amateur champion, had a very easy win in the first round of the British amateur championship, beating tho North Englander, A. C. Patterson, 6 up and 4 to play. Sinclair played magnificent golf in a strong breeze, going out in 33, only one in excess of bogey. ho turned he was 5 up.
