ILLEGAL TACTICS
RUGBY FOOTBALL MATCH REFEREE CRITICISED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 24. Referring to Saturday’s senior Ruglijjr match, Linwood v. Merivale, the “Star’s” football writer says: “The entire game was utterly spoiled by illegal tactics. For strnightout, deliberate obstruction, and playing the man, it would take a lot of beating. From the very outset it was evident there was going to bo a good deal of feeling between the players. u Tlie public saw it early in the game, and there were constant yells at the referee to ‘keep bis eyes open.* How he missed tho jostling and elbowing on the line-outs is beyond comprehension. In many of the loose scrums fists were flying, and every now and again a man would bo hurled out of the ruck and sent sprawling heavily, oven though be did not have the ball Yet it all went on unchecked.”
