REFUSA- TO TOIN STRIKE LORD INCHCAPE’S TRIBUTE. (Sydney "Sun" Cable i LONDON. May In the course of an article in tin l “Sunday Times,” Lord Itichcapc says-: “Fortunately shipping between Britain and Australia and New Zealand is again running with its wonted regularity. This is due to the Sailors' and Firemen’s Union’s ballot, which resulted in a refusal to participate in the strike. The shipping and mercantile community cannot be sufficiently grateful to the union leaders’ wise guidance. Had English seamen struck, it would have spread a worldwide stoppage of British ships, probably jeopardising Britain’s food supplies for many weeks. “Trade unionism is an indispensable factor in the industrial life. Without its medium for collective bargaining British industry and internal and foreign trade would he reduced to chaos. The strike only showed that political action cannot help trade mnioniam.’
