GOSSIP OF THE TURF

Talk from Track and Stable

(By

“CARBINE.”)

There will he an acceptance for Auckland events on Friday of this week. Dubious and Master l’eter were sent home from Wanganui on Friday by S. J. Beid, acting on behalf of the owner- of the horses. Dubious had a big hole in the sole of one of his front feet when he was inspected at the Wanganui railway station, just before he was entrained, and it seems quite possible that the trouble in this loot affected his running at Hawera, Present intentions are that Landbird will contest the Great Northern Steeplechase, and that W. J. Bowden will have the ride. It was reported at Wanganui that the reason for the withdrawal of Nukumai from the Wanganui Steeple, chase was that one of his legs had filled after the race in the lfgmont Steeplechase. An inquiry at the office of the Wanganui Jockey Club brought out the information that the time at which Nippy was scratched for the Empire Handicap was 2.10 p.m. oil Friday. The acceptances closed at noon and Nippy was then in the list. The owner of Nippy, Mr G. Macindoe, talking on the subject, said that the trainer had accepted because he had been unable to see Mr Macindoe, hut when they met at 2 o’clock they decided that in view of the horse’s Cornwall Handicap prospects, risk of incurring more weight should not be taken and the scratching was done without further delay. Sir Pam, looking very portly, was given a run at Wanganui, but was never dangerous. Pouina gave the impression on the second day of the Wanganui meeting that what racing she has had recently has been enough for her, but for all that she ran a great race in the open sis, and filling second place, returned her supporters a good price. Wanganui form does not suggest that many, if any, of Mr J. Hull’s team will be taken to Ellerslie. Mountain Bell came in iame after her fall in the hack hurdles on Saturday. Bustler looked like being a good proposition over country this winter if he stood a preparation, but as he went wrong during the running of the cross-country event at Wanganui on Saturday, it appears as if his trainer will have trouble to do much with. him. He was in nice condition, having done a great deal of hill work. Eden Hall has just about run out his hack engagements. It is understood that the Hawera gelding is under offer of sale and that he is likely to change hands. He proved on Saturday that he is a hack well out of the ordinary—better than was generally supposed. Benzora showed great speed in the open six on Saturday, hut was made so much use of that he did not run on in the straight. Had Royal Damon been nearer the leaders when he turned for home on Saturday, it is possible he would have been very hard for Tukia to keep off. Omahu gave a fair showing on Saturday in the big steeplechase, but those behind him were not good. Sturdee was produced at Wanganui on Saturday, but did not stand up long enough to allow one to get an idea of what he is likely to do this season. Tanadees did not get a good run on Saturday, but he finished on well in the straight. He is a possibility for a race in the near future. Fireblight was given a run in one of the hack flat events at Wanganui on Saturday, but could work up no speed at all, and tailed the field by the best part of a furlong. Good Sport was going well till the business end of the contest in the hack hurdles on Saturday, and then he dropped out. Ngata is not the 'Ngata of old. Time heats the best. One of Hipo’-a best performances to date -was registered in the Empire Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday. The New Plymouth gelding was going well in a handy position till he suffered a mishap to his headgear, but even then he finished very fast in the straight, and would have won had the journey been just a trifle longer. His owner-trainer, Mr E. George, has not had much luck with Hipo of, late, but this was the hardest luck of all. Opa, despite a bad passage, ran a surprisingly good race in the Empire Handicap. Kaiti got into a lot of bother on the first day of the Wanganui meeting, hut was not going like a winner when the trouble occurred. Brushwood Boy, who was among the successful performers at Wanganui, is a four-year-old brother to Eerie, the AVanganui Steeplechase winner. They are a particularly well-bred pair, byNassau from Mountain Dream, by Mountain King from Moorooroo, an Australian-bred mare by Trenton from Nightmare. It is a great family with Commotion, Wakeful, and Radnor among its Australian representatives, and quite as well known in New Zealand, through the doings of Noctuiform, Nightfall, Midnight Sun, Bon Reve, Bon Ton and Eligible, to mention only a few of its star performers. In answer to a query whether he would be riding at the Auckland or the Otaki winter meetings, M. McCarten stated that- he had received an offer to go to Sydney to ride Kiosk, which he thought he would accept. If ho accepts the engagement to rido Kiosk he will miss Ellerslie, as he will have to leave for Sydney next week. EMERSON LEADS REED C. Emerson, who won three races on the first day of the Ashburton meeting added another to his total on the sed ond day. His winning record for the season now stands at fit), giviim him first place on the list, while It. Reed is second with 67£. Emerson’s activities timing the remainder of the season will he restricted to the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month and three Hunt fixtures in Canterbury during July, while Reed will have opportunities during about twelve days’ racing in the North Island to imnrove his total.

EERIE AND HER RECORD

Eerie, who is standing up to her racing in such attractive style at seven years old, it is interesting to note, is included with the division that was not required to carry silk in their youthful days. Up to’date Eerie has contested 71 races and her record stands as follows:

In her five seasons’ racing Eerie has won stakes to the value of £3914. BEFORE THE NORTHERNS I Owing to the heavy and wet tracks the only work done at Ellerslie on Saturclav morning was registered on the sand. * Bay Digliton ran five furlongs in 1.18 1-5.
