SPEEDING ’BUSES
ON HUTT ROAD
At the meeting of the City and Suburban Highways Control Board yesterday, Mr S. G. Nathan asked if something could be done to check tile speed of ’buses and lorries on the Hutt road.
He stilted that while travelling at just about his limit he had been passed by buses and lorries doing at least ten-miles better.
Mayor (Mr C. B. Norwood) agreed that ’buses and lorries did not lose much time on the road, but it was a question whether danger was created as long as thev kept within tho set speed limits, and if they were within tlie limit he did not see that anything could be done. Mr Nathan; "They do more than tlurtv.”
The Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr \V. ’. Strand) complained of tbe serious overcrowding of 'buses, amounting to an absolute menace to life and limb, adding: ‘ln some ’buses there is scarcely breathing room, let alone standing room.” He wished to know whether the Wellington City Council, as the licensing body, was responsible for seeing that ’buses were not overcrowded, or was that the duty of local bodies through whose .areas the machines passed? The Mayor replied that lie would inquire into Mr Strnnd’s question.
