“TOO MUCH CONTROL”

PRIME MINISTER’S INQUIRIES REPORT FROM DAIRY BOARD. When a deputation from representatives of commercial interests waited on tho Prime Minister and members of the Ministry at the end of last month to protest against the tendency of the Government to exercise too much control in matters of business* Mr Coates stated that so far as dairy control was concerned, both he and the Minister for Agriculture were ascertaining from the Control Board what arrangements were Being made for the disposal of the Dominion’s dairy produce. “We have no right to do it under the legislation,” said Mr Coates at the time, “but we are concerned in the national interests; we want to be perfectly certain that we are not running any risk in the sale of that produce, and in its handling and general manipulation. Whether it was wrong to bring in control is not the point at the moment. It was brought in, and there is legislative authority for it.” The Prime Minister stated yesterday, in answer to a question, that he had received the report from the Dairy Control Board, alluded to above, but before making a public statement on tlio question he was waiting a further report from overseas. He certainly intended to make an announcement on the subject, but not at the present juncture.
