FOR EGYPTIAN INDEPENDENCE AMERICAN CONDUCTED CAMPAIGN WIDOW CLAIMS PAYMENT By Telesr&ph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received April 28, 7.15 p.m.) CAIRO, April 27. An interesting lawsuit has been begun on behalf of Mrs Folk, the widow of Joseph IV. Folk, who -was at one time Governor of Missouri, against codefenders, Zaghlul Pasha and Mohammed Pasha Mahmud, for £120,000. Counsel stated that Mahmud went to America and negotiated an agreement under which Folk was to conduct a propaganda campaign in favour of Egyptian independence. He was to receive £SOOO dollars a month for two years, plus £IOO,OOO in the eyent of success. Counsel produced receipts showing that Folk actually received 35,000 dollars, and affirmed that Folk was actively engaged from 1919 to 1921, when the agreement was terminated by a cable from Zaghlul. The widow now sues for expenses and arrears of salary, and £IOO,OOO. Counsel, arguing that Egypt had become a sovereign and independent State, described Folk’s efforts toward the consummation of this condition. The hearing was adjourned. Zaghlul Pasha is the leader of the Egyptian Nationalists, and formed a Ministry early in 1924. He resigned, under pressure, after the murder of Sir Lee Stack in Cairo on November 19th, 1924. Joseph W. Folk was a prominent lawyer and politician, and ruled Missouri from 1905 to 1909.
