OFFICIAL CEREMONY new pumsFworking. The official ceremony of switching on the electric current, in connection with the change-over from gas to electricity as the motive power at the pumping station, took place at 4.30 p.m. yesterday, at the Lower Hutt. Among those present were Messrs W. T. Strand (Mayor of Lower Hutt), J. W. McEwan (Mayor of Petone), A. J. McCurdy (Mayor of Upper Hutt), Vickerman and Lancaster (engineer of Petone), H. Gr. Teagle, and. many others. Apologies were received from Lower Hutt councillors. Mr W. T. Strand referred to the history leading up to the change-over, and spoke of the reticulation. He also touched on the reduction in the fire insurance. With the new system there are three pumps—two electric (one as a stand-by) and the old gas pump, to be used in cases of emergency. The new pumps are entirely automatic.
