SHIFT OF EARTH’S AXIS

DUE TO PACIFIC OCEAN TIDES SCIENTIST’S ANNOUNCEMENT. Telegram. (Received April 28, 7.15 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, April 27. Captain Thomas See, Navy mathematician and Government astronomer at Mare Island, California, announces that he has discovered the cause of the variation of latitude, or periodic “wobble” of the earth’s axis. ; He said he had demonstrated mathematically that the phenomena of Polar motion, or shift of the earth’s axis in the globe, which had interested scientists for years, were due to tides in the Pacific Ocean. His discovery was the result of 46 years’ study of the tides, and the findings under his hypothesis agreed exactly with astronomical observations made in many countries over a period of 35 years. Captain See says his discovery is one of the most notable triumphs in the physics of the earth.
