MAUNGAROA VALLEY

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT. The road over to* Maungaroa valley via Maoribank on the Hutt Galley side is very steeß, winding, narrow, and dangerous, hut it carries a great deal of traffic. Although no official intimation has been received, there is an idea, which has been mooted in the Maungaroa valley, that the Hutt County Council should abandon the present road and in its place carry the actual summit to a spot quarter of a mile further north, where the hill is very thin, and where it is considered that a 60ft cutting could he put in without a great deal of difficulty. This would give an easy grade, and a much safer and better road generally, finish! ing up at Maoribank on on© side and Maungaroa bridge on the other. There is reported to he some disposition in the valley towards a special rate being levied to enable this main road .into' the valley being re-formed os the lines indicated, and the matter

will probably be considered shortly by those most concerned. This was one of the matters brought under the notice of tile organiser of the Wellington Automobile Club when in that district. The re-formation of this road, whijh is used extensively by residents of Maungaroa valley and by hundreds of Wellington motorists every month, would undoubtedly meet' with the approval of residents and motorists. MAKARA HILL BAD FOR TYRES, Makara hill from the Karnri side to the top badly requires attention. Little or nothing appears to have beeii done to it for four or five years past, and it is now in a very rough state, having got down to the hfiavy stones which were used in the foundation, the result being that the ,Makar a valley people who use this road do not wear their tyres out, but simply cut them to pieces. Wc hear that an American visitor to London was enthusiastic about the facilities granted motorists to park their cars in the streets, until he learned that he had been looking at a traffic block.
