GOSSIP OF THE TURE

Talk from Track and Stable (By “CARBINE.”)

TO-DAY’S RACING

ACCEPTANCES AND PROSPECTS / The Wellington' autumn meeting ■will be concluded at Trentham this afternoon. There will be big fields, and, despite the guide which first day's form will give, winners may be just as hard to pick as they were on the first day. SECOND HIGHWFttGHT HANDICAP, Of 300 sovs; one mile and a quarter.

Sottano is left at the head of the handicap, and it has to be conceded that he ran a. really good race on the first day.- • Oil' Thursday's form He has little to fear 'except from Ardfinnan and Asleep, apart from the fact that there are Iseveral new horses m tho race. Of the. newcomers Pantagruel and Master Peter will be the most troublesome, but in the finish the decision might rest between Sottano and Ardfinnan. ' TRENTHAM GOLD CUP, Of 1000 sovs; weight-for-age; two miles. Rapine 9 4 Count j Income 9 4 Cavour 9 0 Gold Light... 9.2 Mask 8 2 Gold Eight will be favourite, with Rapine next in request, and there might be a surprising market for Mask. Gold Light and Rapine have been tried on innumerable, previous occasions and have proved themselves great stayers. My fancy is Gold Light.

MURITAI HANDICAP. . Of 300,sovs; one mile.

The handicapper has made no mistake in placing Perle de Leon at the head of the weights for the Muritai Handicap. The top, weight is qnt overloaded, and being a solid performer will 'be jone of the last *o N give way if, the pressure is on during the run up. the long straight. Anklet, with a eftop in weight/ hois every chance. - 7’ACIFIC HANDICAP, Of 600 sovs; six furlongs.

This event is complicated by the presence in the field of Alyson and Tea Bell, also by the fact that Seatown will 'be improved vastly by the race lie had on Thursday. In addition, Limited is another newcomer. Indications are that if Alyson is with the leaders when they sweep dn to the straight, she will hotbe headed off in the run to thd judee. Tea Bell has never run a bad race. Ho is small, but solid. - AUTUMN HANDICAP, Of 800 sovs; one mile and three furlongs.

Trentham opinion is that Royal Divorce is almost unbeatable, out southerners lean to the idea that whatever beats Listening Post will salute tho fudge. Baldowa won the Thompson and os he was finishing on well at the end of a hard run mile, there is no reason why he should not be prominent at the end of to-day's contest. The only other i oossibility/appears to be Star Stranger, winner of’ the St. Leger.

SUBURBAN HANDICAP, .Of 500 sovs; six furlongs.

There ‘were several disappointments in the open sprint on Thursday, notably Merry .Test and £hirley. Shirley was "oing.like a winner up to the time the field hit the course proper, but from that point she failed to run This is not her form, and it woula be no surprise if she decisively proved this. However, the race is a queer mixture of form and class'. Tukia and Motley havo performed particularly well in recent elassiqs, and on the other hand Civility v’as veiy narrqwly defeated by Tommy Dodd oh Thursday. Lady Ridicule was •nn. the premises nil the way in the Thompson until fhe last furlong. I.e Choucas is a fresh horse in the race with two seconds at the Avondale fixture to his credit. The long straight will suit him Another newcomer is Tanadecs. Yesterday there weTe indications that Polyphemus would be in big demand on the day. It is an open race in v-hich Tnk»n and Motlev represent eluF«. and Civility stands for the best of the handicappers. HUTT HANDICAP, / Of 400 sevs? one mileu

Tommy Dodd appears to hovo all the weight he is to, and form points to Thu Thoj’n. Degage and Siaosi. Father O’Flvnn is expected to impi’ove on anything ho has done in/the past. BELMONT HANDICAP, < <r 300 «ix furlongs.

Ballymoy 11. just scraped home from Benzora. on Thursday, and for a nose victory has six pounds the worst of the weights to-day. However, the Auckland mare looked as 4f a race would not hurt her. and she should go_ well again this afternoon. Great Day 1 had none the berft of the luck 1 on Thursday, Dobbin and Minotus are expected to improve, and Tempean generally does better on the second day after a solid try-out on the opening day of a meeting.

MANAWATU MEETING ! THE ACCERTANCES , Per Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 16. The following acceptances have been received for the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting: WOODHEY HACK HANDICAP, Of 2CO sovs; six furlongs.

SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES, Of 600 sovs; seven furlongs; special weights. . - . Battlement Commendation Front. Rank • Hynanna Lysander Hymgreat Limited Limerick, Alyson tMagna Charta Seatown LINTON HANDICAP, Of 200 sovs; seven furlongs. Indian Sage 9 b Lady Brigadier Isinglass 7 13

AUCKLAND FORM WHANGAREIMEETING ("Times” Correspondent.) j April 16. Our next meeting is the combined Waipapakauri and Whangarei l fixture. We nave not at this juncture had the acceptances, but all indications point to the northern meeting being a very successful one. A few observations on recent form may be of interest to your readers. In the Awanui Hack Handicap Major Abbey, a good winner at Taur’anga, should run well, and Te Kawana, who is reputed to have been unlucky at Wairarapa, with Norma Talmadge, a very free worker at HUerslie, may be his hardest opponent. Spoony be a little bit below the class required to win at Ellerslie. His fault seems to be lack of ability to go with good fielKls in the early part of his races. In/cups decided at country fixtures, where the pace is not on early, the son of Nassau is better suited. For that reason, if taken to Whangarei, we expect him to make a bold bid for the cup on Thursday. In the event of rain two well-known mudlarkß, Passionate and Gold Jacket, may be in request. Archibald will .be taken vo Whangarei, and on his good showing at Ellerslie should not, despite his weight, experience much difficulty in .beating the moderate crowd opposed to him. He lias fine speed and exceptional jumping ability. Maligoloire, -tho winner ot ' two, steeplechases at Ellerslie, is -a very fit horse, but he will probably lack the brilliancy to go with, a fast horse like tho top weight. Daddy’s Girl fell at the last hurdle when leading at tho Avondale fixture. Archibald is likely to be at a short price. The Mangdnui Handicap will probably be confined to a few runners. Most of the competitors ore trained in the north, and we must go on past form in assessing their ability. One who invariably races well in these events is Just Quietly * - Chairman's performances during the past month have shown racegoers that the Nassuu gelding is a very fit and solid horse. Ho has not run one bad one—in his last- six starts, and if taken to Whangarei for the Woiharara Handicap. will take all sorts of. beating. Ring the Hell, who has not been in evidence of lute, is quite capable, if produced at his beßt, of fully extending anything in the race. One does not know what will contest the Houhora Welter. Joy Ride, Passionate, Aurumavis, and Nippy all ran well at Ellerslie, and there is a suggestion that Mangatoetoe may be improved by his racing last week. Nippy struck me us if lie really wanted a good race when lie failed at Bllerslie. The Whangarei track is- a good one for horses who can begin. For that reason Judge's Box may command a lot of support in the Ahipara Hack Welter. Mavenlish, who nearly created a siff--t Avondale, may also be in demand. .steeplechasing season is now approaching, and operations at Ellerslie

show that hunters and steeplechasers are being got ready for' winter events. Very few promising candidates are in evidence so far. The hunting season will open next week, and some possible aspirants for steeplechase honours may appear; but up to date those in the field do not promise to carry off any big honours for the north. Glenotus and Vociferate are both working under E. Rae’s charge. Neither is sound. (The most promising steeplechaser we havo is Kawini. Royal Abbey, who has not been oveidaxed during the last 12 months, ran a great race in the .Brighton Hurdles, and having! in the past proved himself a really good one, should be well favoured when the big fixtures come up for decision at the, Auckland Racing Club’s J une carnival.
