DEVIL’S ISLAND ESCAPE
A plea to the President of France to pardon an escaped convict who for 30 years has been a model husband, father, and citizen, is made by M. Robert de Tiers, the writer. The convict, Honors Chantecaille, is 60 ? 'ears of age, and for 30 years ho has ived in the village of Puymoyen, in the Charente department, respected by all. He is married, and the father of two children, the eldest of whom is about to complete his military service, ' Chantecaille was the village baker, and
he worked hard and amassed a fortune, but at times he became depressed. One day he went to the local police station and said:—“l am an escaped convict. Arrest me.” The village was astonished, but inquiries proved that when he was 20 he 'had been sentenced to five years’ hard labour for robbery with violence and sent to Devil's Jsland, the French penal settlement in French Guiana. Three times he escaped qnd was recaptured, until the fourth time he reached France in safety. He is now in Angouleme Gaol.
